Hi there, our family of 5 (2 adults & 3kids) are planning this itinerary

Day 1 Arrive Tokyo from Narita
Day 2 Tokyo
Day 3 Tokyo
Day 4 Hakone
Day 5 Kyoto
Day 6 Kyoto
Day 7 Nagoya & Shirakawago
Day 8 Tokyo
Day 9 Leave at Haneda airport

My questions is do JR PASS cover all parts from Tokyo --> Hakone --> Kyoto --> Shirakawago --> Tokyo part?

Is there any part that needs extra tickets for Shinkensan or bullet train?

Thanks a lot,
Connie

Hi Connie,

The JR Pass will cover travel between all the cities you visit but there are some parts that are not included.

These are:
-Local travel within Hakone -The bus from Takayama or Kanazawa to Shirakawago.

You can use the Shinkansen for free between the cities that have a Shinkansen station.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Yes, local JR lines are covered :)

You can reach it to use places like Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari, Uji and Todaiji from Kyoto station.

Thanks so much. SInce this is our first time to Japan, I want to know that if we have the JR PASS, do we need to exchange to paper tickets everytime before we get on a train?
Is it operating like an IC card, or do we need to go to a ticket office to exchange for a paper ticket everytime we use
1. Trains between Airport and Tokyo
2. Trains ride within Tokyo or within Kyoto
3. Train rides between Tokyo and Kyoto etc

For going between Tokyo - Kyoto, use the Japan Rail Pass (national one), as there is no regional pass that covers this route effectively.
