Hi,

we are a family of five people (2 adults, 3 childen aged 8,11 and 14) and we are planning a trip to Japan soon.
I would appreciate a help with two issues.

First, timetables:

1) Fukuoka - Osaka - Kyoto on WED 6th of June? We would appreciate to travel around 12 from Fukuoka to Kyoto. Can you tell me which train to take or which timetable to read?
2) Kyoto - Tokyo on Sat 9th of June? We would like to reach our hotel in Tokyo by 6 p.m.. Would you recommend visiting Osaka for few hours before heading to Tokyo? Could you help in reading the time tables or tell a good train to suit our plan.

The the next issue relates to 7 /14 day pass.
We leave Japan on FRI 15th June, so we would be "off" pass for three days in Tokyo (if activating 7 day pass on 6th June). Could you compare the cost of three day public transport for five persons and a journey to Narita airport versus continuation of the pass to 14 days? A bit challenging task for me at least ; )

Thank you so much in advance,

Piia

Hi there,

1.) For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

2.) You could visit Osaka, at the same time, there's plenty to do around Kyoto. Might be easier if you have a lot of luggage.

3.) I think a 7 day JR Pass is the better option. The JR Pass gives you most value on longer travel using the Shinkansen, these trips can be quite expensive. As such make sure to use it from Fukuoka - Osaka - Kyoto and to Tokyo. You can then buy local tickets for travel around Tokyo and to the airport.

Kind regards,
Daniel
