Hi!
We are going on our second family trip to Japan this year, and need some advice on which JR pass and trains to choose. (Because of limited available hotels in the weekends, this itinerary is basically not possible to change...)

Day 1: Hakata - Hiroshima (we arrive Fukuoka with the ferry from Busan)
Day 2: Hiroshima
Day 3: Miyajima
Day 4: Hiroshima - Nara
Day 5: Nara
Day 6: Nara - Nagoya - Ena
Day 7: Ena/Nakatsuwaga/Ena (or other type of transport to reach Magome for the walk to Tsumago).
Day 8: Ena - Nagoya - Kyoto
Day 9-12: Kyoto
Day 13: Kyoto - Kansei Airport

Q 1: Which JR pass would cover this itinerary best and which trains should we choose? Maybe a combination of two different regional passes is needed?
Q2 One person will arrive Kansei on Day 4 and joining the rest of the trip. Which pass (if any) should he get?

Hope you can help us!

Hi Birgitte,

1.) I looked at different options for your itinerary but there is not really a regional or normal pass that would be beneficial for your itinerary. A 7 day JR Pass is not enough days, while a 14 day JR Pass would not be cost efficient. You also travel in multiple regions and as such a regional pass would not help either. I think just buying thinks as you go is the best option.

2.) Your friend could look at using a Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass in case he/she makes a return between Kansai and Hirohsima.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Yes, this helps - Thank you!
Just to double check: The SanyoSanin Area pass will not be beneficial for the first part of the journey either? And then buying normal tickets for the rest? (I guess it depends if the SanyoSanin Area pass cover Nara or not).
