Hi Experts!

We are planning a trip to Japan with our 4 & 7 year old daughters. Looking to be in Japan for at least two weeks, maybe 17/18 days total. Current plan looks like this:

Day 1 - Tokyo, arrive 6am. Settle in, explore.
Day 2 - Disneyland/Sea
Day 3 - Disneyland/Sea
Day 4 - Disneyland/Sea
Day 5 - Tokyo sights
Day 6 - Travel to Hakone. Explore.
Day 7 - Hakone, explore/relax
Day 8 - Travel to Kyoto. Settle in, explore.
Day 9 - Kyoto sights.
Day 10 - Kyoto sights.
Day 11 - Travel Osaka. Explore.
Day 12 - Universal Studios.
Day 13 - Travel to Hiroshima. Explore.
Day 14 - Hiroshima sights
Day 15 - Travel to Toyota
Day 16 - travel to Tokyo. Explore
Day 17 - Fly home

I know JR Pass will get us to each location OK, but interested to hear in what city it would also be helpful to get around, or where I should expect to pay for local transport to get around. Also, is the Green 1st Class ticket worth while. I see our 4 year old will not require a pass, but is it worthwhile considering one to guarantee her getting a seat?

Thanks for any advice.

James

Hello James,

The JR Network in Tokyo and Osaka is the most extensive, for instance you can go to Tokyo Disneyland via Maihama station. Kyoto has limited JR access, mostly to the south and west of the city. Hiroshima has rail access to both west and east and you can also use the local sightseeing bus and ferry to Miyajima using the JR Pass.

I prefer the Green Seats because the offer more comfort and are generally more quiet. That said, ordinary seats are better than 1st class in many western countries. I don't think a separate pass for you 4 year old is necessary, you could ask the staff when reserving the seats if the train is busy and then buy a ticket for her at half price (child price) in case the train is really busy.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
