My husband and I are flying into Sapporo in March2026 and plan to tour Japan and fly home from Fukuoka in mid April.
Is the JR pass the most cost effective and best for our travel needs?
We will have around 17 - 18 travelling days as follows:

Sapporo to Hakodate
Hakodate to Tokyo
Tokyo to Hakone - thinking of using the Romance Train
Hakone Loop
Hakone to Nagano
Nagano to Matsumoto
Matsumoto to Kyoto
Day trip to Kyoto to Arashiyama
Kyoto to Osaka
Osaka to Hiroshima
Hiroshima to Fukuoka

Many thanks

Hi there,

To get the best value from your trip, you might consider a 14-day JR Pass. As your itinerary spans almost the entire length of the country, the pass would pay for itself quite quickly.

I would recommend activating the pass when you depart for Tokyo from Hakodate. Please note that there are JR exchange offices located at both Sapporo and Hakodate stations for your convenience.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
