My family is traveling in 2 different configurations and I am trying to decide between a 7 and 14 day pass for each of us.

Person 1
Day 1 Tokyo >> Nikko
Day 3 Nikko >> Tokyo
Day 5 Tokyo >> Kyoto
Day 9 Kyoto >> Tokyo

Person 2-4
Day 1 Tokyo >> Nikko
Day 3 Nikko >> Tokyo
Day 5 Tokyo >> Kyoto
Day 10 Kyoto >> Kanazawa
Day 15 Nagano>> Tokyo

Neither the 14 nor the 7 work exactly....
Any advice would be helpful!

Hi Corrine,

For Person 1: My recommendation here is to use a 7-day Japan Rail Pass and use it from Day 3 - Day 9 and buy local tickets for Day 1.

For Person 2-5, I would do similar but use a 14-day JR Pass from day 3-Day 15. As Tokyo - Nikko, costs a lot less than Nagano - Nikko.

To save on costs traveling to Nikko, you could use local JR lines from Tokyo - Utsunomiya and then the JR Nikko line to Nikko. A one-way fare would be ¥ 2,590 / which is one of the lowest cost options to get to Nikko.

Kind regards,
Daniel
