Aloha,
Flying in (10/5) and out (10/14) of Kansai International but need help navigating when to purchase 7-day JRP for. Should we buy regular train tickets for Kansai (10/5)-Osaka (10/7)-Kyoto, and then get JRP in Kyoto (10/10) for the trip to Tokyo and back to Kansai (10/14)? Is it wiser to get the 7-day JRP 10/8 while in Kyoto (i.e. to use with local transportation)?

Local transport within Kyoto and the Kansai Area does not cost a lot, I recommend starting your JR Pass when you go to Tokyo. This because travel on the Shinkansen costs way more than local travel and also is where the JR Pass is best used.
