Good evening

I am planning to reach Tokyo on 15th March @ 17/30 hours. My tentative plan is
- From Narita take a flight to my farthest location i.e., Osaka and land in KIX airport at 22/00 hours and check into a hotel ( to be booked) - Day 1 - take a day long conducted bus tour to Hiroshima and Mejiyama - Day 2 - Do local sight seeing in Osaka - Day 3 - Take a day long sight seeing bus tour to Kyoto+Nara+Kobe - Day 4 - Travel to Hakone - Day 5 - Visit Mt Fuji - perhaps take a day tour from Hakone - Day 6 - Local sight seeing in Hakone - Day 7 - Travel from Hakone to Shinjuku Tokyo in the morning do some sight seeing - Day 8 - Take a full day sight seeing of Tokyo by guided tour bus - Day 9 - exit Japan by morning flight

i am 63 and my wife is 55 - and we can speak English only. Hence i am looking for guided tour as far as possible. Requesting your guidance or suggestions on the above plan

  • Can we take a 7 days Japan Rail pass to cover the above itinerary - is it beneficial
  • Can we book our seats in advance in the above 7 days pass to meet our travel itinerary
  • For day 1 - Whether Japan Rail recommends travelling by Train to Hiroshima from Osaka and doing a day trip locally and visiting Mejiyama and returning back to Osaka by evening?
  • Can we take our luggage with us during our train journey - are there any extra charges for that
  • Which are best locations to stay in Osaka and Hakone i.e., stations for which we need NOT search for cabs to reach and preferably walkable distance to station.
  • We are pure vegetarians and do not eat even fish and eggs. Do we get vegetarian food on the trains as some places travel time may be 3 to 4 hours Arigato...Suresha, Bangalore

Hi there,

1.) A JR Pass would have been useful here if you visited the places on your own. However by going everywhere by bus, there is little use left for a JR Pass. Are you going to bigger cities like Hiroshima by train (and are they included in the tour or not?) if would make a big difference.

2.) Yes

3.) Either option is viable. However, a sunset at Miyajima can be very beautiful, so I recommend staying the night.

4.) Luggage can be taken on board for free.

5.) Shin-Osaka station and Osaka station and Odawara station in Hakone.

5.) Japan can be quite a hard place to find dietary foods, most food contains meat, egg or fish. I'm not a vegetarian myself and don't know that much about it in Japan. There are plenty of good blogs online about such a diet in Japan. Just have a look around Google and you should find plenty of options.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel San - appreciate your response. Had few additional queries and request your support
1. I will go for Shinkansen to reach Hiroshima from Osaka and from Hiroshima station will try to take train or bus for local sight seeing. What is the best option to see places from Hiroshima station? You have mentioned Miyajima sunset is beautiful. If i stay till sunset, do i get trains back to Osaka?

Hi again,

I think the one thing you have to do in Hiroshima is see the A-Dome, peace memorial museum & park. Then eat local Hiroshima Okonomiyaki somewhere in Hiroshima. There's even this small little are called Okonomiyaki-mura (village). With many small stores.

With the JR Pass you can ride the local Hiroshima sightseeing bus for free that stops at most important places.

You should have enough time to make it back to Hiroshima and get on a train to Osaka if you want to see the Sunset.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
