Hi all,

I used teh JR pass before and it was really easy to travel around! Now I'm only staying 7 days in Tokyo. I tried to use the fare calculator but it did not work the way i wanted (or i did something wrong)

All day trips here

Narita - Tokyo

Tokyo Fukushima
Fukushima Tokyo

Tokyo - Nikko
Nikko - Tokyo

Tokyo - Yokohama
Yokohama - Tokyo

Tokyo Haneda

And of course the JR line subway in Tokyo.

I think it's cheaper to buy a JR pass for 7 days correct?

thanks!

Hello there,

There is something to be said for using a JR Pass here.

That is if you want to use Shinkansen bullet trains to Fukushima and Nikko, then a JR Pass is recommend. However if you are okay with taking slower local trains, then buying normal tickets is cheaper.

Also interested in what when wrong with the Fare calculator. Let me know and I'll see if we can improve it.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi there,

I'm aware that we not not fully link the Farecalculator on our website, this is partly because its still in development and any feedback is welcome.

So even when i use the JRpass to go to and from the airport? Sorry, I am not sure what you mean with this question.

Hi Daniel,

oke clear about the fare calculator.

Last question was if i also use the JR pass to and from the airport (Narita and Haneda) will it still be cheaper to buy 'normal' tickets and not the JR pass. (including my day trips to Nikko, Fukushima and Yokohama)

thanks again!

Hi again,

I guess looking at the numbers is the best way to decide this.

Narita Airport - Tokyo ¥ 2,820
Tokyo - Fukushima ¥ 8,750
Fukushima - Tokyo ¥ 8,750
Tokyo - Nikko ¥ 5,380
Nikko - Tokyo ¥ 5,380
Tokyo - Yokohama ¥ 470
Yokohama - Tokyo ¥ 470

For a total of ¥ 32,020 or ¥ 2,910 in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. Additionally the JR Pass is good for local travel on JR lines in Tokyo and on the Monorail to Haneda Airport.

The above travel prices are quoted for Shinkansen travel and a JR Pass will help you make savings if you wish to travel by Shinkansen. At the same time I must point out that there are local train options available for Nikko that cost about half the price, and it would be slightly more economic to go that way without the JR Pass.

That said, a JR Pass will be the most convenient option as its your one ticket to all your travel and you can take any train you'd like. May have been easier if I did this at the start :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel
