Hi We are going to Japan for Rugby World Cup Oct 11th to Nov 3rd. We intend to stay for 23 nights flying in and out of Fukuoka- we have matches at the weekends with sightseeing during week.

Day 1-3 Fukuoka
Day 4-8 travel around Kyushu by car rental and/or train including Tangashima island
Day 9 bullet train from Fukuoka to Tokyo
Day 10 Tokyo
Day 11-15 travel to Hiroshima and Kyoto
Day 16-17 travel to and stay in Yokohama
Day 18- 21 Travel to Mnt Fuji and Hakone
Day 22 return to Tokyo by train
Day 23 Tokyo
Day 24 return to Fukuoka by train for 14h flight

Does that itinerary look possible?
Which JR train pass/es should we buy?
We like to go to wilderness for hiking, nature and swimming - do you have any suggestions about sights in each place for us?

Hi there,

Your trips Fukuoka - Tokyo and Tokyo - Fukuoka are by far the most expensive routes and using a JR Pass for both will give you the best value. As this period is over 14 days, I advise using a 21-day JR Pass.

For hiking, there are many great options available. For instance, when you are in Hiroshima, head over to Miyajima (free with the JR Pass) and hike around the island for some amazing views of Hiroshima bay. An other that comes to mind is doing the Onomichi Temple Walk. This can be a great day trip exploring Onomichi station.

An other great visit is Naoshima, where you can enjoy hiking, nature and swimming :) Base yourself in Takamatsu for a night or two, for the best experience :)

Near Yokohama, I'd head to Kamakura and Enoshima. Both are beautiful and there are several great hikes in the area.

Kind regards,
Daniel
