Hello everyone,

Here is my current itinerary - landing and departing from Tokyo in July

7 nights Tokyo
5 nights Kyoto
2 nights Hiroshima
3 nights Osaka
5 nights Tokyo

Should I get the 21 day JR pass or do a 14 day JR pass and buy a Suica or Pasmo for the time in Tokyo ?

Thank you for any advice !

Hi there,

I think the better option would be to get a 14 day JR pass and buy a Suica for the days that you are in Tokyo. Local travel within Tokyo won't cost a lot and you'll be fine using Suica.

Rest of the trip looks great!

Thank you Daniel-san,

I forgot to add in some day trips - could you re-review

7 nights Tokyo - day trip to Mt Fuji
5 nights Kyoto - day trip to Nara
2 nights Hiroshima
3 nights Osaka
5 nights Tokyo - day trip to Nikko

Would you still recommend the 14 day and Suica ?

Sorry again ... there will be 2 adults and 1 child travelling in July ... the difference between the 14 day and 21 day will be $300 USD. Will using the Suica for about 11-12 days in Tokyo be much less than the $300 savings and factoring in the time/energy to use the Suica (choosing destinations - returning the card) over the JR pass as well . Thank you

Hi again,

I still would recommend a14 day JR Pass, given that you'd use it to cover travel to Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, Osaka and Nikko. Travel within cities simply does not cost a lot.

That said, the price difference with a 21 days JR Pass is relatively small and you could cover that amount quickly with a side trip or two.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
