Hi,

I'm traveling to Japan for the first time and am a bit overwhelmed trying to decide whether the JR Pass is right for us, or if it's more economical to buy as we go. Can you give us some advice on whether the pass makes sense for our itinerary since we're flying into Osaka and flying home from Tokyo? Thank you!

Day 1 - Kansai Aiport to Osaka
Day 2 - Osaka to Kyoto
Day 3 - Kyoto
Day 4 - Kyoto
Day 5 - Kyoto to Osaka/Kobe
Day 6 - Osaka to Kudoyama (pilgrimage hike to Koyasan)
Day 7 - Koyasan to Osaka
Day 8 - Osaka to Kawaguchiko
Day 9 - Kawaguchiko
Day 10 - Kawaguchiko to Tokyo
Day 11 - Tokyo
Day 12 - Tokyo
Day 13 - Tokyo
Day 14 - Tokyo to Narita Airport

Hi there,

The best option here would be to buy normal tickets. Most of your travel is concentrated in the Kansai Area and the Tokyo area. With only one longer trip between them. A JR Pass would have been good if you made a return between Tokyo - Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for your prompt response! This is what I expected from reading other posts online. We are planning to do some day trips, such as Nara from Osaka and Nikko from Tokyo. Would that change your recommendation, or is the pass really suited for groups traveling Tokyo to Kyoto and back?

While the difference would be smaller, I'd still use normal tickets for side trips. That would be different if you would make a side trip using the Shinkansen, say to Himeji or Hiroshima.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

Hope this helps too :)
Daniel
