The best option here would be to buy normal tickets. Most of your travel is concentrated in the Kansai Area and the Tokyo area. With only one longer trip between them. A JR Pass would have been good if you made a return between Tokyo - Kyoto.

Thank you for your prompt response! This is what I expected from reading other posts online. We are planning to do some day trips, such as Nara from Osaka and Nikko from Tokyo. Would that change your recommendation, or is the pass really suited for groups traveling Tokyo to Kyoto and back?

While the difference would be smaller, I'd still use normal tickets for side trips. That would be different if you would make a side trip using the Shinkansen, say to Himeji or Hiroshima.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.
