Hi we are visiting Japan from the UK, arriving at Tokyo International 22nd March. I think I am correct in thinking that we can use our JR pass to and from the airport. I am having trouble working out if we should get the 7 day or 14 day pass.
This is our itinerary:
22nd March Tokyo International to Tokyo
23rd March Tokyo to Kyoto
27th March Kyoto to Matsuyama
30th March Matsuyama to Takamatsu
!st April Takamatsu to Tokyo 4th April Tokyo To Tokyo International
I am grateful for your help,
Best wishes
Pip

Hi Pip,

Let's have a look at ticket prices to find out:

Tokyo - Kyoto ¥ 13,400
Kyoto- Matsuyama ¥ 7,400
Matsuyama - Takamatsu ¥ 5,990
Takamatsu - Tokyo ¥ 17,980

This totals up to ¥ 44,370, the cost of a 14 day JR Pass is ¥ 46,390. So you're about ¥ 2.000yen short of breaking even with the JR Pass. That said, add any more travel and this could quickly change :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel, that is very helpful. I think if I add on the train journey to and from Narita Airport and Tokyo (3000 yen each way?) I would do more than break even. And we may even make some shorter trips as you say.
Thanks again
Pip

Hi Pip,

Yes, a one way Tokyo - Narita on the Narita Express is about 3.000yen/one way, so there you are :)

Have a great trip!
Daniel

Thanks again Daniel San. Just a couple of other questions. A friend told me that it is compulsory to make a reservation on the train from Narita to Tokyo Central, is this correct? If so wiill this be a problem to do on arrival?

Also we plan to travel to Kyoto from Tokyo the day after we arrive in Japan. Will we have trouble getting reservations to Kyoto or can we make reservations in advance, but before we validate our JR Pass?

Thanks again,
Pip

Hi Pip,

Hope all is well. Yes, the Narita Express has reserved seats only. As this train is to/from the airport only, everybody gets their seats reserved upon arrival and it won't be a problem.

The Shinkansen will also be easy to reserve, if you want to be secure of seating reserve your seats in a day in advance. Generally speaking though, you can do so 15minutes before departure.

Kind regards,
Daniel
