I am planning a family trip, 7 adults, in August. Rough itinerary is:
Day 1- Arrive Haneda, stay in Tokyo
Day 2- Explore Tokyo by local transit
Day 3 - Travel to Kiso Fukushima for 2-3 nights
Day 6 - Travel to Kyoto for 4-5 nights, using as hub for day trips to Nara, Osaka, and local transit
Day 10 - Return to Tokyo for departure.

We want to use Shinkansen as much as possible.

Does it make sense to get a 7 day pass, or possibly even a 14 day pass? What would you recommend?

Hi there,

For your itinerary, the 7-day Nationwide JR Pass is the best value if you time it correctly.

If you activate your 7-day pass on Day 3, you will cover all your major long-distance costs including the return leg to Tokyo provided you return by Day 9. However, if you do not plan to return to Tokyo until Day 10, it would be more cost-effective to pay for your Day 3 travel separately and activate your pass on Day 4 instead.

I hope this helps!

Kind Regards,

Mariko
