Hi .. We are a family of 4 (including 2 kids aged 12 and 15)
Finalized our Japan trip and it looks like this..
Day 1: arrive at Narita airport, travel to Tokyo, Shinjuku ( intend to buy 1 way train tickets for this journey)
General travelling within Tokyo. (Till day 6)

Day 6 activate one week JR Pass.. Use for Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto.
Possible day trip to Osaka while in Kyoto.
Day 10: leave Kyoto for Hiroshima (transfer at Shin Osaka?)
Day 12: leave Hiroshima for Narita (transfer at Osaka and Shinagawa?)

During our stay in Tokyo we plan to walk and use the subways ..
1/ Do you recommend the Tokyo subway 72hr ticket or suica/pasmo cards?
2/ Does it make sense to buy the 1 week JR pass or do you think the 14- day pass would be better for travel which then includes the first journey from airport to Tokyo plus within Tokyo..
3/ is my 12 year old entitled to a child fare on the Tokyo Subway? . Think we just missed the JR child cut off for him.. Am I correct?

Could you help with the above questions please?

Hi there,

1/ Do you recommend the Tokyo subway 72hr ticket or suica/pasmo cards? Overall day passes provide good value for the Tokyo Metro if you plan on going around Tokyo a lot. At the same time, Suica can be more flexible as it is valid on nearly every kind of transport but it does not provide any savings by itself.

2.) I think getting a 7 day JR Pass is the best option. Local travel + one way from the airport would likely not make up for the price difference.

3.) Child tickets are pretty much the same all over Japan for transport. 0-5 is free 6-11 is half price and 12 year or older are considered an adult.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
