What to do for birthday?

Hi there!

I'm currently in the midst of planning a trip to Japan for myself. my boyfriend, and our best friend. We will be spending a good 5 weeks in Japan traveling during the month of March through to April. In the month of April we will be in Kyoto, and it will be my boyfriend's birthday. I was wondering what I could do for him that would make it unforgettable and uniquely Japanese?

I was thinking of planning an evening with a Maiko, as this would be a once in a lifetime experience. So far Kyoto Gion Hatakana is looking the best (http://www.kyoto-maiko.jp/blog_english/index.php?e=2 ) althought it is farely pricey.. and from the English translation of the website I have no idea if this includes a dinner.. Is anyone able to help translate the website for me, and find out what they do food wise at the Kyoto Cuisine and Maiko Evening?

Another place I was looking at was Kyoto Gion Corner. (http://www.kyoto-gioncorner.com/global/en.html)

Is there anything else tha I should think about doing for him on his birthday? Like special places to dine, sight see, or experience?

We have not booked any accomodation yet.... I know we will need to do so soon, as we will be going during high season... so If you have any reccomendations on places to stay I would appreciate it!! :)

Thank you!
Erica.

Hi Erica,

That's a very interesting question! Kyoto houses many great experiences some hidden some in plain sight.
Here are some that you could consider visiting:

If you wish to experience and participate in Japanese tradition, consider a visit to Koke Dera better known as the moss temple, this is one of the more exclusive temples in Kyoto and only accessible if you make a reservation (well) in advance. You will be asked by the monks to participate in Buddhist ceremony, prayer and character writing, later you can walk the Zen garden and experience what Zen really means.

In the evening consider going up the hill where Kyomizu-dera is located for a breathtaking night view of Kyoto. Sometimes the surrounding forest and temple are completely lid up, making for a very romantic view. The temple itself is also very beautiful and well worth a visit. It does close before dark, so you you may want come a little eurly.

One of the greatest tressures Kyoto has to offer is the Katsura Imperial Villa. Especially the gardens are very beautiful.

Perhaps best suited for a honeymoon, Tawara Ryokan is the oldest and most prestigious Ryokan in Kyoto. It's not just a Ryokan it's a once in a lifetime experience, some people even say that it is the best accommodation in the world. The only downside is that a stay there may well take up half of your travel budget.

Looking at the first Maiko website and order blogs talking about it, it seems like a very nice experience. I took a look at the Japanese and English website but they do seem to be outdated a little, so I would contact the establishment directly if you wish for more information.

As for hotels and accommodation, it's hard to recommend something specific because everyone has their own preferences. What I would recommand is taking a look at websites that specialize in Japanese travel, instead of the more global websites. Good examples are [Japanican] and Rakuten Travel these places usually offer better rates and more accommodations.

I hope this helps!
Daniel

Thank you so much Daniel!!

I have just sent the first Maiko website an email. Hopefully they will get back to me as promptly as you have!

I will definately look into the specialised Japanese travel websites. I have visited Japanican serveral times in my research, but have not yet looked (Or heard of) Rakuten Travel.

I will also look into all your suggestions!! :)

Thank you so much for your response!

Erica.
