Hello, Our family of 5 will be in Japan on April 8 to 15, 2014. April 8th and 15th are excluded since its our arrival and departure respectively. Arrival time will be in the morning while departure time will be at 8pm. We love to see the sights in Tokyo, check the best museums, visit Disney Sea, cherry blossoms and do a day trip to Mt. Fuji, watch the Geishas, shop and of course sample the best street food in tokyo as well as other japanese food. We also plan to visit kyoto for its sights and food. If you have a schedule like mine, how would you divide the 6 days between the two cities? Where should we spend more time and why? We plan to take the shinkansen to Kyoto from Tokyo, is there a luggage restriction? If there is, can we just put our luggages in a compartment which we can rent?

Hi there!

Visiting Japan with family is great, there's so much to see do and experience and being able to share that really makes for an unforgettable experience. For a general itinerary: I'd say spend two / thirds of your time in Tokyo and one / third in Kyoto. Tokyo is huge and there's so much to do but most of the sight seeing places and visiting spots are modern or at least contemporary adding a visit to Kyoto can really had a little more culture and feel of traditional Japan to your trip. Of course you can add more days to Kyoto are spend more time in Tokyo depending on your interests. Travel between Tokyo and Kyoto is done using the Shinkansen and each train car has a separate compartment for luggage which is generally enough for anyone, although you should not carry much more than one full sized suitcase per person.

Have a great trip in Japan!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the reply. I have come up with a tentative schedule for our trip.

April 8 - arrive at narita airport. Stay overnight in Tokyo
April 9 - Catch the train to Osaka
April 10- Kyoto
April 11- Osaka
April 12-15 - Tokyo

What do you think of my schedule? I s the 7 day pass worth it? if yes, when do i activate the pass, is it on the 8th or on the 9th?

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Best regards,

Eric

Hello Eric,

Yes a JR Pass would certainly be worth it. The price of a 7 day JR Pass is about the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto or Osaka. Now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price and basically any additional travel is what you save.

I'd suggest that you start using the JR Pass from day 9-15. This way you can use it for travel around Tokyo as well in addition for travel back to the Airport.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
