Hello,

I'm planning my 9 days trip to Japan this winter and I plan to spend my new year in Takayama and Shirakawago.
I'll first stay at Tokyo for a couple of days before denaturing to Takayama and Shirakawago. I will then return back to Tokyo and have 1 day trip to Nikko, 1 day trip to Kawaguchiko.
So now I'm wondering if I should buy general JR Pass or not.
I think that the JR Tokyo Wide Pass which costs 10,000 yen covers quite well the trip to Nikko and Kawaguchiko.(If I'm not wrong).
Therefore I think of 2 options:
1. Travel by bus (Nohi bus) to Takayama (and Shirakawago) and buy JR Tokyo Wide Pass for Nikko and Kawaguchiko
2. Buy JR pass for 7 days

Can anyone please tell me which option is better ? (I'm especially worry about the trip to Takayama and Shirakawago. I travel alone this time and the hotel already costs me a fortune.)

Thank you in advance and best!

Hi,
Both the 7 day pass and Tokyo Wide Pass would pay off for your plans. However, there is no rail access to Shirakawago, so you'd need to pay for the bus from Takayama or Kanazawa and out. Another difference is that you can get to Kawaguchiko on the Tokyo Wide Pass, but you would need to pay for the Fujikyu train from Otsuki to Kawaguchiko if you have the full JR Pass (55 minutes, 1140 yen one way).
I haven't checked the fare or the time for the Nohi bus, so it's up to you. But you would be getting some good savings with the 7 day JR Pass, and even more if you are flying through Narita and can use it for the Narita Express.

Best of luck.
