Tokyo - Hakone - Osaka - Haneda (Tokyo)

We visited Tokyo,Kyoto,Hiroshima and Miyajima in 2011.

We're returning to Japan again in June, staying in a different part of Tokyo (Hamamatsucho) for 5 days, Osaka for 5 days, then back to Haneda for 2 days before flying back to the UK.

In Tokyo we'll be taking side trips to Kamakura and Nikko.
Stopping off at Hakone on our 6th day on our way down to Osaka. (If we liked it enough we could then stop off again on our way back to Haneda)

In Osaka we'll be taking trips out to Nara and Kobe.

We're unsure whether to buy a 7 or 14 day JR rail pass and also, how to manage our time better within Hakone and the relevant rail/transport ticketing options available for our visit there.

Any help and travel advice would be gratefully received.
We'll definitely be using the luggage forwarding service again so we can travel much lighter between Tokyo and Osaka.

Many thanks
Regards Julie A

Hello Julie,

I think a 7 day JR Pass would be the better option if you can manage the return Tokyo - Osaka with it and it would be even better if you included the day trip to Nikko as well. These are by far the more expensive parts and using a JR Pass here would give you the best possible savings.

In Hakone there are no JR lines and a Hakone Free Pass can be a great compaignion to your Japan Rail Pass.

Enjoy your trip!
Daniel

Dear Daniel-san,

Thank you so much for your reply.

With the 2 day Hakone Free Pass, would you know if it has to be used over 2 consecutive days?
Or, could we use it for 1 day on our way down to Osaka, and possibly for another day on our return back to Haneda?

Your help has been much appreciated.

Regards
Julie
