Hi there! We are planning to go to Japan this coming March 2013 and we are planning to go to Osaka for 2 nights, Kyoto for 2 nights and Tokyo for 5 nights with Tokyo having some side trips to Mt.Fuji/Hakone and to Nikko (then back to Osaka to head home). I don't know if the above itinerary is the best cost efficient way of availing the japan rail pass.. Could you kindly help me rearranging them to meet the best possible savings of availing the japan rail pass?

Also would you happen to know on how to check the time and availability of trains? and how to determine beforehand if we could use the Japan rail pass to and fro a particular place?heard they go to hyperdia.. but i don't know how to use despite researching a lot on japan rail pass.

Would appreciate help on this. Thanks!

Hello!

Looking at your itinerary it looks like a 7 day rail pass taking you up to Tokyo and back from Kyoto (with side trips) will give you very good savings over standard tickets. You should aim to purchase single tickets as needed for your time in Osaka I think. To check, lets look at the costs for all your legs:

  1. Kansai airport > Osaka: ¥2600, (53mins, 57km)
  2. Osaka > Kyoto: ¥540, (29mins, 42km)
  3. Kyoto > Tokyo: ¥13420, (161mins, 513km)
  4. Tokyo > Odawara: ¥3840, (35mins, 83km)
  5. Odawara > Tokyo: ¥1450, (36mins, 83km)
  6. Tokyo > Nikko: ¥5630, (121mins, 150km)
  7. Nikko > Tokyo: ¥5630, (117mins, 150km)
  8. Tokyo > Osaka: ¥13950, (194mins, 556km)
  9. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3340, (57mins, 64km)

TOTAL: ¥50400 for 9 legs

As you can see your travel to and from Kansai Airport and to Kyoto comes to ¥6480, which in addition to the 7 day rail pass charge at ¥28,300 will bring your total travel costs to ¥34,780, a saving of ¥15,620 over purchasing tickets individually.

I know Hyperdia can be a little confusing, but we have a great video on how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders on our blog that I really recommend you take a look at to help you plan. We explain how to configure it to only return JR trains valid for the JR pass which should give you better information on what you can do with a pass (in general, you can use all JR trains except the Nozomi and Mizuho class bullets).

Hope this helps, but please ask if you have any further questions!

Hi again!

Just a question. How would you know if the time provided by Hyperdia based on search results is AM or PM. The routes provided in the search results are the only options at a particular time right? Thanks!

Hi there,

You can select the time you'd like to arrive or depart at within the Hyperdia options when you configure your search.

Hope this helps!
