Hi, I am planning to visit the above places (Osaka-Kyoto-Nagoya-Toyko) as a solo traveller in 10 days between 15-24 December 2017.

I will arrive Osaka On 15 December evening and plan to depart from Tokyo for Malaysia on 24 Dec evening.

Can you recommend to me the best itinerary with the:
1) top places to go in each location (exclude theme parks)
2) appropriate length of stay in each location
3) best area to stay in each location including reasonable price range for single room or single bed for solo traveller and convenience
4) best public transportation to take including which JRPass and their prices
5) do Malaysian need a visa to visit Japan
6) any other things that I should be aware of for the above trips

Thanks and hope to hear from you.

Hello there,

1.) I did a blog post with detailed suggestions in Kyoto, Osaka and Tokyo some time ago. You can find it here. I can also give you recommendations if you have any specific interests. Nagoya is not there because it is more a business city than tourist city. Still Nagoya downtown is nice for shopping and I would also recommend a visit to the castle if you are around.

2.) This is a bit personal. I would recommend making a list of things in each city you want to do and see how many days you'd need to do them. A general guideline would be 3days Tokyo, 3 days Kyoto, 2 days Osaka, 1 day Nagoya. Although it could be nicer to change Nagoya with Nara.

3.) For this, I recommend using a general booking website and read reviews from other travelers and sort the hotels by your budget. Hostels in Japan are also amazing for travelers who travel alone.

4.) The Japan Rail Pass will be your basis to travel to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara from there you can also use the JR Pass on local JR lines in those cities. In Kyoto, there are not that many JR lines and often it pays off to buy a 500yen day bus ticket or rent a bicycle.

5.) I'm not a visa expert for Malaysians. As far as I know you can get a 14 day visa on landing but definately check with the proper institutions.

6.) You might like to use a Pocket WiFi. This way you can also navigate and stay in touch with your family and friends.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
