I just got my pass for my last minute trip to Tokyo. Arriving NRT and headed strait to Kyoto as a base for 4 days.
Taking the Nex to Tokyo then switching.

I figured that a day or two in Kyoto then jump on the train first thing and got see another place or two.

First question is about luggage. My wife and I each have 1 26" suitcase. I have heard its can be tough to travel with on the train. What is your experience. So you know I did get the Green Car pass as I heard there tends to be more space.

We are hoping to catch a 430 nex to tokyo then a train a few minutes later to Kyoto. On the Return we may just head to Tokyo the day before our flight as its a 11 am flight and with the morning trains not starting till 5 we will be cutting things close.

Any feedback on the luggage and the early morning train or just take the train the night before would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Brining a suitcase with you on the trains generally is no problem. There is space for about 4 suitcases in each train car near the end row of seats. Green Cars are generally traveled a lot less, so there is also a better chance to find a good place for your suitcase. Otherwise you can talk to the conductor and he/she will help you find a good place.

I do think it would be a good idea to return to Tokyo or maybe even Narita (city) beforehand. The route Kyoto - Narita Airport takes about 4H, and it is best to have as much behind you as possible in case of an early flight.

Make the best of your trip!

Thanks, I have read a lot of people saying that using a courier is better but by the time the bag gets there we need to ship it back to tokyo to leave.

Any suggestions on day trips from Kyoto? We will be going to Tokyo the day before our flight to make it less rushed.

Thanks for you quick response.

Hi Darrell,

For Tokyo - Kyoto I would just take the suitcase with you. You can always take a taxi to and from the station if you have some distance to travel to your hotel.

From Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe and Himeji are all great day trips from Kyoto. I can give you more specific recommendation if you let me know what you are interested in.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
