Kyoto - Takayama - Tokyo

My family of 4 is taking a 14 day tour of Japan starting in Tokyo in March and ending in Osaka on 1st April. Once the tour has ended we will stay another night in Osaka then travel to Kyoto for 2 nights. We plan to travel to Takayama on 4th April then from Takayama to Tokyo on the 6th of April.
I am trying to find the quickest way to make these trips. Should we travel on a JR rail Pass? I thought it may be cheaper just to buy the tickets as we go. Can tickets be booked/purchased in advance if we don't have a JR Rail Pass.

Hi there,

For this trip it is better to buy a normal tickets as you travel one way from Osaka - Tokyo, be it with side trips to Kyoto and Takayama. A JR Pass would have been a great option when you made a return.

The quickest route from Kyoto - Takayama is to take the Shinkansen from Kyoto station to Nagoya station and take the Hida wideview express to Takayama. From Takayama - Tokyo, take the Hida wideview express back to Nagoya station and from there the Shinkansen to Tokyo.

Tickets can be purchased once you are in Japan, this can be done at any station. This is the same with and without a JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
