Hello! I’m planning a trip to Japan with my family of five. We’ll be visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka. We’d like to use the bullet trains for travel between cities, as well as the subway and metro systems within each city. What’s the best transportation option for us? Should we get a JR Pass, Suica card, or both? Also, does the JR Pass cover both bullet trains and city subways/metros?
Thank you so much. Virginia

Hello Virginia,

Getting both would make the most sense to me. The JR Pass will be great for your long distance travel on the Shinkansen and trains. Then use the IC card, like Suica for anything else.

The JR Pass covers the nationwide JR Network, including all bullet train lines but not the metro. Also note that you can use the Hikari and Sakura train services for free but the Nozomi and Mizuho do require a supplement.

Kind regards,
Daniel
