Getting around using JR pass/ suica

Hi

My partner and I am travelling to Japan, I've never been before and would love some feedback on our itinerary and also what travel options are best between cities, mainly how to get the most out of the prepaid JR pass.

Our itinerary includes:
Day 1-3 Haneda airport to Tokyo (staying in Shinjuku area)
Day 4 Travel from Tokyo to Hakone (1 night stay)
Day 5-7 Hakone to Kyoto
Day 8-10 Kyoto to Osaka (day trip to Nara)
Day 11-12 Osaka to Kanazawa (day trip to Shirakawa-go)
Day 13-15 Kanazawa to Tokyo

  1. Are JR train lines accessible between each of these cities?
  2. How can we go from Kanazawe to Shirakawa-go?
  3. I'm keen to see some sumo wrestling; it will be in Nagoya in July, would you recommend going for a short half day or day trip out of Kyoto? Transport there seems a little tricky, I would rather use the JR pass but it looks like the quick Nozomi shinkansen is not covered, can you advise how else we could get there ?
  4. We are using JR from Tokyo to Odawara, but am not sure what options are from Odawara to Hakone-can we use the suica card here?

Any help appreciated! Thank you!

Hi there,

1.) Yes, you can visit all these cities using the JR Pass. Note that you still may need local transport such as within the Hakone region or the metro.

2.) You can use the NoHi bus to Shirakawa-go, note that this is not included in the JR Pass. Details are here:
https://www.nouhibus.co.jp/english/

3.) You can use the Hikari Shinkansen to Nagoya from Kyoto. This is nearly as fast as the Nozomi and covered by the JR Pass.

4.) You can buy normal tickets within Hakone, use Suica or buy a Hakone Free Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
