Hi! I will be visiting Japan from March 17-28 entering and leaving from Nagoya.

I would like to get your recommendation on the best JR Pass to buy. Should I get the:

a) 5 Day Takayama-Hokuriku Pass (I indend to get 2 passes to cover me for 10 days)
b) 7 Day JR Pass
c) 14 Day JR Pass

Thanks

Hello there,

It would depend on what days you will travel and how many days you wish to spend in each place. At the same time, Takayama, Kanazawa and Toyama are not that far apart and buying normal tickets may also be a good option here.

I can give you a better opinion if you let me know how long you plan to visiting each visit.

Hello Daniel-san,

Here is my itinerary

March 17 - Arrive Nagoya
March 18 - Nagoya
March 19 - Nagoya-Takayama
March 20 - Takayama
March 21 - Takayama
March 22 - Takayam-Kanazawa
March 23 - Kanazawa
March 24 - Kanazawa
March 26 - Kanazawa-Toyama-Nagoya
March 27 - Nagoya
March 28 - Leave Nagoya

We plan to use a pass to transit from Takayama/Kanazawa to nearby places as suggested in the Takayama-Hokuriku Pass. I also intend to purchase two passes per passenger to cover us for 10 days.

Appreciate your expert advise.

Kind regards

Hello again!

I think you can use a Takayama-Hokuriku Pass but note that you are only allowed to purchase one per passenger per visit top Japan. So it would make sense to buy for one way and normal tickets for the way back.

Caution: A Visitor may purchase Kansai Area Pass ONLY ONCE per visit.

See: https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/travel-information/pass/kansai/

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Dear Daniel-san

If I will be limited to one 5 Day Pass, then I might get short on my itinerary. Alternatively, If I decide the 7 Day JR Pass, will it cover all destinations on my itinerary as below? :

March 17 - Arrive Nagoya
March 18 - Nagoya
March 19 - Nagoya-Takayama (JR Pass Day 1)
March 20 - Takayama (JR Pass Day 2)
March 21 - Takayama (JR Pass Day 3)
March 22 - Takayam-Kanazawa (JR Pass Day 4)* is this possible?
March 23 - Kanazawa (JR Pass Day 5)
March 24 - Kanazawa (JR Pass Day 6)
March 26 - Kanazawa-Toyama-Nagoya (JR Pass Day 7)
March 27 - Nagoya
March 28 - Leave Nagoya

I intend to visit these following locations from these points:

Takayama - Gero, Gokayama, Shirakawago
Kanazawa - Kanazawa Central Park, Tojinbo Cliff, Kaga Onsen, Shintakaoka, Toyama

Please advise if I will able to do this and use the 7 Day JR Pass with my intended itinerary

Appreciate your feedback.

Thank you

Hello again,

The JR Pass will cover all rail travel in your adjusted itinerary but the bus to Shirakawago and Gokayama would not be included. All the rest is and you can use the JR for travel between Takayama and Kanazawa.

Does that help?
Daniel
