First time to Japan

Hi, my husband, my 11 yr old son and I are visiting Japan in August and I was looking for some guidance on which train passes will be most suitable for us.

We are arriving at Kansai Airport on Sunday 30th July around 5.30pm and will be staying in Osaka for 7 nights. During that time we want to do day trips to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Kobe and probably a few others (suggestions welcome)

Then on 6th August we need to get to Itami Airport for 10:30am for a flight to Haneda

On arrival at Haneda - around 1.30pm, we are looking to get to Hotel Gracery Shinjuku, where we will be staying for 6 nights. During our stay in Tokyo, we want to visit Hakone / Mt Fuji / Gotemba , Harajuku, Shibuya, Ginza, Akihabara and Ueno Park.

Any guidance on which train passes will cover the majority of these trips and which trains to take would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

The JR Pass is the only pass that covers the area you wish to travel in (between Hiroshima in the south and Tokyo in the north). Possible, you could look at a 7 day JR Pass to cover your day trips in the Kansai Area and travel to Tokyo. This because the JR Pass is best used for longer distances and local travel, for instance in Tokyo, does not cost a lot by itself.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.
