Hi,

I will be travelling to Japan for the first time during Christmas and New Years for 2 weeks. I plan to fly from US to NRT airport, and stay in Tokyo for 2 nights, then go to Hakone and stay in Hakone for 1 night. Then go to Kyoto and stay in Kyoto for 3 nights, then go to Nara for 1 night, and then go to Osaka for 3 nights, and then return to Tokyo for anther 3 nights, before returning from NRT airport to US.

Please advise me if getting a JR 2 weeks pass is the most economic way of traveling for the 2 weeks in Japan.

Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated and thanks a lot for your help in advance.

Hi Betty,

I looked at the best way to match a JR Pass to your itinerary but I can't really match a JR Pass to your itinerary. Let me explain, the JR Pass works best for longer inter city travel, think of going to Kyoto, Osaka and back to Tokyo. A 7 day JR Pass would work great here if you made the return in 7 days. At the same time, you don't do enough travel for a 14 day JR Pass to help you make savings.

Thus for now my advice would be to buy normal rail tickets. A JR Pass could quickly become a good option if you did a little more travel, such as a visit to Hiroshima or if planning changed a bit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
