Hello,

we are travelling with a 7 and a 13 year-old girls and for them this is the first trip to Japan. I am trying to organize a trip that mixes culture and kid entertainment while minimizing travel time. However I am struggling with Japan's transportation system as there are million options and passes so any help on which pass to get is very welcome.

I was planning to do the following
Day 1. Arrival at Kansai. Train to Kyoto and overnight there
Day 2. Visit Kyoto
Day 3. Kyoto and Nara
Day 4. Go to Osaka and visit aquarium. Overnight in Osaka
Day 5 Visit Osaka and travel to Tokyo
Day 6 Tokyo to Nikko and back. It seems that the best way is to go via Tobu line from Asakusa where our hotel is but this is not included in the JR pass
Day 7 Visit Tokyo
Day 8 Any suggestion ????
Day 9 Disneyland
Day 10 Fly back to Europe

So my questions are:
1. What are the best ways to go from city to city
2. Does it make sense to buy the JR pass or not?
3. Any suggestion of what else to do in Japan or changes in the itinerary? I am still on time to change everthing with the exception of the flights.

Thanks a million for your help

Hi there,

1 & 2) Looking at your itinerary, I think you will be best toff buying normal tickets instead of using a JR Pass. This because the cost of normal tickets is below the cost of a 7 day JR Pass. All the cities you plan to travel to and from have direct connections between them. For instance you can take a direct train from Kyoto to Osaka station or from Kyoto to Nara, no need for any transfers. The cheapest option to Nikko is indeed the Tobu line from Asakusa.

3.) For some ideas on what to do have a look at this blog post for what to visit with your kinds. You don't have to follow the itinerary but there may be places in there you may like to visit.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
