Hi Daniel,

My family of 6 adults will be travelling to central Japan and the Kansai region in December 2016.

We will be taking trains on the following days.
Day 1: Nagoya - Gero
Day 2: Gero - Takayama
Day 4: Takayama - Shirakawago - Kanazawa
Day 5: Kanazawa - Kyoto
Day 6: Kyoto - Hiroshima - Himeji - Kyoto
Day 8: Kyoto - Osaka
Day 10: Osaka - Nagoya

Could you recommend which JR passes to buy? What do you think of the 5-day Takayama Hokuriku pass and the 5-day Kansai Hiroshima Area pass? But that will not cover our last train journey from Osaka - Nagoya.

Please advise.

Regards,
Mian

Hello Mian,

I would recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for day 1-7 and then buy normal tickets for Kyoto - Osaka (560yen) and Osaka - Nagoya (6,550 yen).

Travel from Nagoya - Gero - Takayama is: 6,610 JPY
Travel from Kanazawa - Kyoto is 6,900 JPY
Travel from Kyoto - Hiroshima - Himeji - Kyoto is 25,070 JPY.

For a total of 38,580 yen or 9,470 yen in savings, as the 7 day JR Pass is 29,110yen.

I think this would be the most economic option, you would also just have to buy one pass instead of two.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the price breakdown and your advice.

I received the following quotations from a vendor.
JR Pass Nationwide for:
7 days: Ordinary Class – S$361
Takayama-Hokuriku Pass – S$174
Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass – S$162

It looks like the 2 passes together cost less than the 7-day JR pass. Would the 2 passes be a better deal? The Shirakawa-go buses are included too.

Regards,
Mian
