Hello, Daniel!
My friends and I are going to Japan in January (2019) and before we can buy the JRPass we have a few questions to ask you.
We would just like to know two things:
1) If I buy the JRPass now (in August), is there a problem that I'll only use it in January 2019? Do I need to buy it later, like November or December?
2) When I get to Japan, what do I have to do to activate the JRPass?

Hello Matheus,
Awesome that you've decided to come to Japan!
1.) The JR Pass needs to be activated within 3 months after purchase. Since you plan to use it in Jan next year, please wait a little longer and get yours in Nov or Dec.
2.) You go to one of the bigger stations with your passport and JR Pass voucher and the staff will activate the pass for you. A full list of stations can be found here.
