Hi - we are making a return visit to Japan this year - last time for the Sakura - this time for the autumn colours! Below is our itinerary and we would like advice about the best railpass option please. We are 3 seniors all around 70 years of age.
11th November Arrive in Fukuoka (we will travel by rail for day trips to nearby islands in this area etc)
17th November Travel to Osaka
22nd November Travel to Kyoto
25th November Travel to Takayama
29th November Travel to Hakone
2nd December Travel to Shinjuku-ku Tokyo
6th December Travel to Haneda Airport
Thanks
Paddi

Hi Paddi,

In terms of a Rail Pass, I think the 14-day JR Pass is the best option and can be used for travel to all the cities you plan to visit. I would advise activating on the 17th when you go to Osaka, or perhaps 1-2 days earlier if you do day trips that are further away from Fukuoka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi again Daniel
I haven looking at our itinerary again. Would we be better off getting the 21 day pass to cover us until we get to Tokyo especially if we activate it to do some day trips from Fukuoka’s?
Thanks again

Hi Daniel
As you advised, our party of 3 has purchased a JR 14 day pass for travel around Japan. However, while we are in staying in Fukuoka for 5 nights, we will do 3 day trips to Arita, Kumamoto and Beppu as well as exploring the Kukuoka area. Is it worth our while buying a 3 day Northern Kyushu pass for this travel? One of the party may not visit Arita so is it cheaper for him to buy individual tickets? Thank you

Hi Paddi,

Sorry for the delay, yes a Nortern Kyushu pass would be well worth it. Just doing Hakata - Kumamoto by Shinkansen will easily pay for the pass.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Hi again Daniel
Thanks for your reply. We need your help urgently please as things have got a bit confusing. Originally you suggested a 14 day pass for our itinerary which we purchased and then more recently the 3 day Northern Kyushu (which we haven’t purchased yet.) However with both of these passes, it still leaves us with no cover for 1 day/night exploring in Hakone then a journey from Hakone to Shinjuku plus travel around Tokyo for our 5 nights there plus travel to Haneda airport. The company we purchased the 14 day passes from are willing to refund them so we can purchase a 21 day pass (we need to decide quickly as we leave in 2 weeks); what would you advise please.? Thanks Paddi
