Hi There,

We will be in Tokyo from the 1st January until the 5th Jan and then will be going to Hokkaido. I was wondering of it is more cost effective to get around Tokyo with the national/regional pass and then go by train to Hokkaido or is better to fly to Hokkaido and then what passes would I need for Tokyo to do Disneyland and a few other touristy things, plus get to and from Narita airport.

Kind regards
Trish

Hi Trish,

It is hard to make the direct comparison between rail and flying, as airfares change by the day while train fares are pretty much steady.

Since you are travelling close to new year, flights might be expensive, so rail travel would make more sense that way. You can use the JR Pass up to Sapporo and around Hokkaido. Which is a very cost efficient way of travelling around.

Kind regards,
Daniel
