What kind of pass should I get for Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Tokyo?

Hello everyone!

I will be in Japan from April 2-10. I will be traveling from Narita airport to Shibuya, then Kyoto, Osaka, and then back to Tokyo for a few days. What kind of pass would be the best for this?

Also, I am a bit confused on the details of the JR pass. Will I be able to use the JR pass for all of these cities I listed? When I type the routes into google maps, it seems to give me a local line in combination with a "JY" line. So I will not be using the JR pass for the whole route most of the time. Is this correct? Can anyone clarify that for me?

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would be a good option if you can make the return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka with it. The cost of a 7 day JR Pass is similar to a return ticket but now you get 7 days of unlimited travel.

I would avoid using Google Maps, as it does not show what trains are covered by the JR Pass. Instead I'd look at using Hyperdia.com
