Hi Everyone,

We are having a bit of debate about the 7 vs. the 14 day pass with the following itinerary. We are looking for the cheapest option. I have done the math but having an experienced travellers opinion would be helpful

May 3 Arrive Tokyo
May 6 Travel to Shibu Onsen/Nagano
May 9 Nagano - Kyoto
May 10-12 - day trips to Nara and Osaka
May 13 Kyoto to Tokyo
May 14 Leave Tokyo

We thought maybe doing the 7 day pass with a combination of paying for the Tokyo/Nagano trip separately and activating the pass on the 9th to go to Kyoto. Using it for our day trips, back to Tokyo and for the airport. From an experienced traveller's perspective does this make sense? It appears about $100 cheaper not factoring any local trains we would take in Kyoto or Tokyo. Either way, the JR passes don't seem to cover much for Tokyo or Kyoto.

My other question is about pre-booking trains. If we do delay our activation i.e. when we arrive and exchange our pass can we pre-book a train for our first valid day of the pass? Such as arriving the 3rd, activate the pass and select the 9th for the first day and then pre-book the Nagano to Kyoto trains?

Thanks so much!

Hi there,

The issue I see here is that a 7 day JR Pass would not fully cover your most costly routes. Activating it on the 6th would would mean that the last day of usage is the 12th until midnight. There would not really be a point in buying a 7 day JR Pass and then pay for one of the expensive routes. Maybe you could return to Tokyo on the 12th by taking a late train? This would be a minimal change in terms of time spend in each city.

Otherwise I think you could look at using a 14 day JR Pass, covering the full route, local travel around Tokyo and using the Narita Express to/from the airport will pay of the price difference with a 7 day pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Sorry, the 7 day pass is based around activating it on the 9th of May not the 6th. If we did the 7 day we would separately pay for the trip to Nagano. That way we have the pass for the most expensive parts of the trip i.e. Nagano to Kyoto and Kyoto back to Tokyo.

I did a basic calculation and as I said above doing 7 days plus paying for the airport one way and to Nagano seemed a bit cheaper but again not sure if I did that correctly.

Hi again,

What numbers did you use? They depend on the route you'd use from Nagano - Kyoto. As I calculated this, it would be lightly more expensive to get a 7 day JR Pass.
