Hello!

  1. We will be arriving at Narita Airport and want to connect with the Shinkansen to Kyoto. How often does the Shinkansen run daily between these 2 points?

  2. Is the Shinkansen a direct train from Narita to Kyoto?

  3. I read that you can reserve your seats before departure, but can you reserve them in advance? If so, what is the procedure?

  4. As we will be buying a 7 day JRPass, we will need a one way ticket from city of Tokyo to Narita. Which is the fastest train and how much does it cost?
Or would you suggest we could take a taxi or an airport transport because we will be 4 people?

  5. Luggage: we will be arriving from Mexico with a 23 kilos suitcase. I understand that you can't travel in the Shinkansen with it. What is the drill to have it sent to the hotel? And what are the dimensions and weight of the suitcase permitted on board?

Many thanks your your replies.

Hi Christa,

1 and 2.) The Shinkansen does not run to Narita Airport. To get to Kyoto, take the Narita Express train to Tokyo and Hikari Shinkansen from there. There is a possible train connection at least every 30 minutes during the day.

3.) You can make reservations once you reach Japan and have exchanged the JR Pass. This can be done at any manned ticket window.

4.) The Narita Express costs around 3.000yen one way per person into Tokyo and is covered by the JR Pass. This is the fastest way. A taxi will cost anywhere from 10.000 to 20.000yen.

5.) The official rules are: You may bring up to two pieces of baggage on board free of charge. For each bag the total of the length, width and height must not exceed 250 centimeters, the length must not exceed two meters and the weight must be no more than 30 kilograms.

This however is not enforced as you would see at airlines. A more general rule would be, you can bring what you want within reason, as long as it does not inconvenience other passengers. I don't think you would have problems taking your luggage on the train but may still want to consider forwarding your luggage, as it is just more convenient.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
