If I use the exchange order and obtain my 7 day JR Pass at 8pm on Monday 9 April, when is the latest time that I can be on a train and have the Pass cover the fare?

Hi Bron,
Validity of the Japan Rail Pass is measured in whole days, not hours. This means if you activate your rail pass any time on Monday the 9th of April, it will expire at midnight on the Sunday the 15th. If you are still on board a JR train at midnight (for example, using a sleeper service), the JR Pass will still be valid until you reach your destination provided you do not leave the Japan Rail network.
I hope this helps!
