Hi, my fiance and I are visiting in October for a period of about 16 days.

Our plan was to fly into Tokyo, stay a few days, take a train to Akita for a few more, then take a few from Akita to Sapporo. Drive around Hokkaido for a few and finally take another train back down to Tokyo and fly out from there.

How much of this can the Rail Pass cover? Is it possible to get a 14 day and activate it on the 3rd day of the trip? How far in advance should we book tickets?

Thanks!

Hi there,

The JR Pass covers travel to all the cities you plan to visit, as well as the train back to Tokyo. You can activate the JR Pass at any day. Seat reservations are recommended to be made 1-2 days in advance and 3-4 days in advance during busy periods.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for the information!

If you wouldn't mind, I have a follow up. Do these still apply for the Shinkansen? I had read that requires reservations far in advance.
