Hi.

If I have a JR pass, and I would like to use it for the Hayabusa train from Tokyo to Shin Hakodate Hokuto, how much do I need to pay to upgrade my seat to Gran Class?

Do Gran Class seats for this route sell out quickly, meaning I have to book them weeks in advance?

Thank you!

Hi there,

While possible, I would not recommend upgrading, as you would have to pay a big amount. That said, here's how to do it.

The full fare for Tokyo - Shin-Hakodate-Hakuta is: Total:¥ 38,280 (Ticket Fare: ¥ 11,560 Seat Fee:¥26,720). In case of upgrading to a higher seat than what the JR Pass is for, then the JR Pass will cover the basic Fare but not the seat fee). You would thus have to pay an additional ¥26,720 to use Gran Class.

Usually Gran Class compartments are empty or only 1-2 seats are taking.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
