I understand that unused JR pass is eligible for a refund after 15% service fee if returned within a year. I also read that we can get a refund with 10% fee when returned in Japan before the specified first date of use. We are still going to Japan, but we bought the passes a little too sooner before we realize that we are not really benefited with our itinerary. Here are my questions.

  1. What is the refund type if the JR pass is returned in Japan? Does it go back to the credit card in dollars after the currency exchange rate is applied? Or do we get a cash in yen? I just thought this could be a way to get a refund with the least damage on our end because of 10% fee in lieu of 15%, but not too sure if it really is going to be worth it. Would you recommend?

  2. We also rented a pocket WiFi. If we decide not to activate the JR pass, can we still get and use the pocket WiFi?

Much appreciated!

Hi Yuri,

1.) You would turn in the voucher at one of the exchange stations and would get the refund in yen (cash).

2.) Yes, you can keep the WiFi.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
