Travelling into / out of Narita for 23 days, but passes only valid for 21 days

Hello,
New to this forum, so apologies if this question has already been asked. Travelling from Australia to Tokyo for 23 days in June-July 2020. We fly into and out of Narita. We are hoping to spend 2 weeks in Tokyo, visiting friends and sightseeing, then travelling to Kyoto for 1 week, before coming back to Tokyo and flying out of Narita. "We" are 2 adults and 2 children (12y & 14y, but adults for the purposes of travel ;-) )
I am looking at buying the 21Day JR Pass Ordinary, as $807 x 4 really adds up, but my question is, what happens after 21 days when the pass expires and we still need train travel to get to Narita airport? I can't really see any answers to this query.
Do I need to buy a 21 day and a 7 day pass per person? Is this even possible?
Also, is it worth upgrading the tickets to Green Car for the shinkansen or is ordinary sufficient?

Would really love any insight others have or suggestions on best way to tackle this.

Hi there,

You can always buy regular train tickets to travel around Japan when you don't have a JR Pass handy.

When it comes to money, a JR Pass is best used for longer travel to say Kyoto. Depending on what day trips you do from Tokyo a pass may be worthwhile there too but I can't say for sure without knowing where you wish to travel.

A Green Class pass is very nice, I personally love the extra space and comfort it brings but there are other good things you could do with that money as well, like a good Japanese dinner somewhere.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel-san,
We are looking at Narita-Tokyo (return)
Tokyo-Kyoto (return)
Many trips around Kyoto for 7 days.
Many trips in/ around Tokyo, Kamakura, Yokohama, Disneyland, Asakusa, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Mt Fuji, Hakone.
I see the JR Pass doesn’t include the Tokyo Metro..
Based on the trip calculator, I think a Suica or Pasmo card may be the way to go?
What is the best way to book individual Shinkansen tickets? How far in advance?

Appreciate the advice, thanks! :)
