Hi,

We are arriving to Tokyo from US on Oct 27th until Nov 3rd and planning to purchase JR rail pass for travelling.

How advance should we order the JR rail pass?

Here is the plan, can you advise if JR rail pass is a good option, does it cover it all travels between the cities? Do we need to book seats before hoping on the trains? And what is the schedule? Also, what do you recommend purchasing for local commute in the cities?

Oct 27 - Oct 29 Tokyo (3 days) - I don't believe JR rail pass can be used to commute within Tokyo so should we buy the JR rail pass starting Oct 29th for travel?

Oct 30 - Hakone - should we buy regional pass for Mount Fuji?
Oct 31 - Nov 2 - Kyoto - what is the recommendation to commute in Kyoto?
Nov 3 - Osaka or Tokyo (we split, some of us goes to Osaka and some to Tokyo to flight back home)

Thanks very much in advance.

Hello Sema,

I recommend using a 7 day Japan Rail Pass for your trip. Going to Kyoto, Osaka and back to Tokyo.

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
