My friend and I have 2 nights in Mt Koya on 12th and 13th November. We are booked into a hotel in Fujikawaguchiko on 14th and 15th November. Will this itinerary be possible? How long will it take by train? What is the best way? We have a JR pass. All answers will be most welcome.

Hi there,

It is possible but it will be one hell of a trip, with many transfers.

You can find the full route here. The pink trains are not included in the JR Pass. The green trains and Shinkansen are included.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel. Is there any other way that would not take as long and without having to change as much.
We are from Sydney and I guess would find the whole journey very confusing as we don't speak any Japanese either. When I booked our accommodation I thought it was only about 6-7 hours by train but obviously it is the time by by road.

Hi Daniel,
Your reply was very much appreciated. Would we be better buying a a different rail pass for this journey (instead of using our JR pass). Would it still entail as many changes? Your reply would be most appreciated as would any one else who can advise me.

Hi Leckus,

This is the best route by rail. You were just unlucky picking two places that are remote within mountain areas. Because of this there are no fast or direct trains.

The JR Pass would still be the best option, there's no other pass that covers the Tokaido Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Shin-Yokohama. This is by far the most expensive part.

If you want to have an easier trip, then I would advice going to Tokyo first for a day or so and then travel on to Kawaguchiko.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Thank you for your advice. Unable to go to Tokyo and then to Fujikawaguchiko. All accommodation is booked.

Kind regards

Leckus
