Hello Everyone! This is my first travel to japan with my family and understanding Japan Rail Pass is quite troubling. hehe

Hyperdia doesn't really include the local lines that JR Pass covers so it's difficult for me to find what appropriate trains to ride. So, my questions are....

  1. What would be the best JR rail/local train to ride when travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto/Arashiyama?
Please explain in details as i get confused about transferring to different rails. thank you :)

Our itinerary includes:
Kinkakuji Temple at Kyoto
visit the Arashiyama Monkey Park
Tenryū-ji Temple
Bamboo Grooves and maybe Jojjakuji
After that, we will go to Nara to see:
Todai-ji temple and Daibotsu-den
Nara Deere Park

(the list doesnt have to be in order. I can change it whatever is logical using the JR Pass)

  1. Next day, we will leave Nara and go to Osaka-Namba.

THANK YOU! I can't wait to visit Japan!! :)

Hi there,

You can also use our JR Railway map to find your way around Tokyo, Kyoto and elsewhere.

https://www.jrpass.com/map

You can use the Hikari Shinkansen directly from Tokyo to Kyoto, a local train from Kyoto station to Saga Arashiyama station. As well as a local train from Kyoto station to Nara station (all of Nara can be accessed on foot). For Namba go to JR-Namba station.

It's all quite simple once you've done it once.

Have a good trip!
Daniel
