Hello,
We are flying into Narita in September and meeting our son, who is in the military there. We will do a little sightseeing in Tokyo and then head south, visiting several places. We will drop our son off after two weeks in Iwakuni and then we will have another week. If we get a JR Pass, is our son who is in the military able to get tickets with us? Are we better off getting a two-week pass and flying from Hiroshima back to Tokyo or getting a 3-week pass?
Travel in September to Japan

Hi there,
To use the JR Pass, the user needs to have a temporary visitor visa. Military type visa's do not qualify. You can still get the JR Pass and travel together with your son, but it would mean he'd buy normal rail tickets. To go do, go together to a ticket window and ask the staff to put your seats together.
A one way rail ticket Hiroshima - Tokyo costs less than upgrading a 14-day JR Pass to a 21-day JR Pass, so it may be an interesting option to get the 21 day JR Pass.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
