Hi.

Looking for suggestions on suitable overnight stopovers travelling from Tokyo to Tomamu, Hokkaido.
We're travelling with a 4 and 7 year old and realise that this trip can't be done in one day.
We're planning on buying a JR East/Hokkaido passes.

My husband and I ( without children) did this a few years ago before the shinkansen went to Shin- Hakodate-Hokuto and stayed in Hakodate, but it is a 25 additional train trip and with children, this just adds to the travel.
It would be great if we can arrive somewhere early afternoon and have a look around and a nice meal before proceeding the next day. Aomori?

Thank you for any suggestions

Hi there,

Historically speaking, travellers would stop at Aomori for the night before making the hop to Hokkaido. With the opening of the Hokkaido Shinkansen, people now prefer to stay on board and stay at Hakodate (or Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto). You can definitely have a good meal at Aomori, though there's not that much to do in terms of tourism. Hakodate offers a lot more in that regard.

Alternatively, Hirosaki is a nice place to explore for an afternoon. Hirosaki castle and old Former samurai houses will be cool for the kids. It's a small detour though.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
