Please correct me if I am wrong, if we are going to land at Tokyo and travel round Tokyo and then take the train to Osaka then travel there and Kyoto, we do not need to buy JR Japan pass, right? We can buy Tokyo-Osaka pass for 7 days and it will cost less. Please advise, thanks!

Hi,
Your question is a bit unclear.
It's true that going one way from Tokyo to Osaka and nothing else would not make a JR pass pay off.
It's not clear by what you mean by "Tokyo-Osaka pass for 7 days" and costing less.

However, if you take a few long day trips from Tokyo like you suggest, you could make the JR rail pass pay off. Or a day trip from Kansai to Hiroshima would do it.

Good luck.
