Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa using JR Pass

Hi,

We're planning to go to Gala Yuzawa on Dec 20. Can we use JR Pass coming from Tokyo? I saw this link saying that using JR Pass will take us from Tokyo to Gala Yuzawa for under 1.5 hrs beginning ski season DEC 22 - https://www.jrpass.com/blogs/skisnowboard-day-trip-from-tokyo-by-japan-rail-pass

Now I'm confused, does this mean that on ordinary days, JR Pass cannot be used for this route, and the one mentioned in the link is only promotional beginning Dec 22? Gala Yuzawa's website says their winter season opens on Dec 16. I've checked with Hyperdia too and found that Tokyo-Yuzawa will take at least 4hrs. Now, I'm even more confused.

Hi,
The extension to Gala Yuzawa is for ski season only. Here is some more basic info. As it says, you can get there from Tokyo in 80-90 minutes by bullet train.
