Our plan is for a two night stay in Kyoto in the middle of our week in Tokyo. We figured on a day trip from Kytoto to Nara.
First, does a JR Pass make sense? Travel will be completed in 3 days. While in Tokyo, I assume we will be using subways only since we wouldn't venture far from central Tokyo. Also, would a regional JR pass such as the Osaka-Tokyo-Hokoriku Arch pass work?
Thanks!

Hello there,
The JR Pass is a cost effective option to consider for your trip. The pass costs around the same as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. From there any additional travel is where you can make savings, even if it is just one way to Narita Airport.
The Osaka-Tokyo-Hokoriku Arch pass would work technically but it also means traveling via the Hokoriku Arch. This takes about 2 hours more each way between Tokyo - Kyoto. There are nice stops on the way, such as Kanazawa and Nagano but I think the JR Pass would be better if you just have 3 days for Kyoto.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
